Sculpture

Dear Students, Parents, and Guardians,

My name is Jimmy Ilson and I am the chair of the Art Department at Pope Francis Preparatory School.

I am also your child’s teacher.

As I welcome you back to a new school year, I also realize that there must be many questions and concerns regarding how this year will unfold.

Please be certain that I am here for all of you.

If you have any questions, concerns, or simply things you need some help with, here is my contact info:

What follows is an Overview of the Class, including: a Course Description, Class Values, my policy on Grades, and “How to Stay Safe in the Art Classes during a Pandemic”.

Course:Sculpture

Description: This course is designed to offer students a comprehensive, hands-on experience of art in the 20th-21st centuries through the study of photography and sculpture. Our class will be experimenting with a variety of mediums, including: Photo Sun Prints (Cyanotypes), Collage, Plaster, Paper Mache, Clay, Wire, Wood, and Materials from Nature. Some of the areas that we will study, that relate to Modern Art, include: Art Terminology, Art History, Art Biographies, Music of the 20th Century, Quotes from Artists.  The class will be a combination of daily activities and assignments, as well as developing greater projects over the course of weeks. Students in this course will be expected to participate in classroom discussions and occasional critiques. The students will also keep a continuous, semester long, “journal”.

Class Values:

The Art Room is a sanctuary for Respect and Learning

We practice Honesty, with our community and ourselves

We each become a Responsible member of our community

We strive to communicate with words of Kindness

“We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools”
Martin Luther King Jr.

“For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.”

Nelson Mandela (born 1918);
Former President Of South Africa

Grades and Syllabus

My goal is to post a weekly grade that is referred to as “Participation and Effort”. The rubric for the Participation Grade, as well as my rubric for any graded assignment or project, will be found in the Student and Parent Portal. The course syllabus is also posted in the Portal.

Safety

During these unpredictable times we will be following safe practices to mitigate the potential spread of the corona virus. Our efforts will include:

Wearing Masks

Using Hand Sanitizer at the start and end of a class

Cleaning desks with sanitizer at the beginning and end of a class

Art Materials: Each student will have a set of their own materials

Limited Time Inside: I plan to be outside as much as possible.

A Thought

This will be a school year unlike any before. This is a community that is strong, caring, and benevolent.

If you need anything, please contact me. We truly are in this together.

Peace always,

Jimmy Ilson
