HIGH SCHOOL CLASS
Dear Students, Parents, and Guardians,
My name is Jimmy Ilson and I am the chair of the Art Department at Pope Francis Preparatory School.
I am also your child’s teacher.
As I welcome you back to a new school year, I also realize that there must be many questions and concerns regarding how this year will unfold.
Please be certain that I am here for all of you.
If you have any questions, concerns, or simply things you need some help with, here is my contact info:
What follows is an Overview of the Class, including: a Course Description, Class Values, my policy on Grades, and “How to Stay Safe in the Art Classes during a Pandemic”.
Description: This course is designed to offer students a comprehensive study of the soft style martial art T’ai Chi Ch’uan. The style of T’ai Chi the students will practice derives from the Yang family lineage. The form, a sequence of sequential postures, that will be taught is referred to as the “37 Posture Yang Form”, which is a form that was modified by Professor Cheng Man Ch’ing in the mid-20th century. There will be preliminary and auxiliary exercises introduced during the semester, as well as a series of exercises referred to as “Swimming Dragon”. These exercises complement the overall practice and bring a greater awareness to the students regarding the connection of Form and Function. Other parts of our semester long class may include: Readings from Taoist texts (Such as the Tao The Ching), Readings from the foundation text of T’ai Chi (The Tai Chi Classics), and a study of Chinese Brush Calligraphy.

Grades and Syllabus
My goal is to post a weekly grade that is referred to as “Participation and Effort”. The rubric for the Participation Grade, as well as my rubric for any graded assignment or project, will be found in the Student and Parent Portal. The course syllabus is also posted in the Portal.
During these unpredictable times we will be following safe practices to mitigate the potential spread of the corona virus. Our efforts will include:
Using Hand Sanitizer at the start and end of a class
Cleaning desks with sanitizer at the beginning and end of a class
Art Materials: Each student will have a set of their own materials
Limited Time Inside: I plan to be outside as much as possible.
This will be a school year unlike any before. This is a community that is strong, caring, and benevolent.
If you need anything, please contact me. We truly are in this together.
